Floating Shelves can make a standard wall look elegant. They don’t just add to the beauty but are also quite useful. These wall-mounted shelves appear to be floating in the air, and hence they are called floating shelves. Mounting floating shelves on the wall is relatively easy. Wall studs or brackets mostly support them, but there are other ways too.

One of the unique abilities of a floating shelf is its versatility to be hanged anywhere, be it in a living room, bedroom, or kitchen. For instance, you can set up your book collection, photo frames, and other antiques to reflect your personality. With a floating shelf, you can reclaim the space and decorate it by putting fancy stuff on it.

But before we proceed, some common questions need to be answered. These include: How do you mount floating shelves with ease? Do I need a helping hand while mounting a shelf? Does it damage the wall or the paint? If it does, how should we install it in a way whereby it doesn’t affect anything? Let me answer these questions from my own experience.

Here are some ideas that will help you mount a floating shelf with the utmost ease. So follow the tips below and make your wall look nicer.

Align the shelf to prevent sagging

A tilted or sagging shelf can bring all your articles placed above it to tumble down on the floor. It is essential to ensure that your shelf makes a 90-degree angle with the floor and is leveled properly. The best way to do this is to measure the distance from the floor and make markings on the wall where you want to mount the shelf. I would recommend making 3 to (how many?) markings to make sure that you get it right. Next step should be to drill holes as per your markings and fasten the mounting bracket on the wall.

Install floating shelves on wall using a Sealant

It is convenient to mount a floating shelf on tiles using a heavy-duty sealant, sanded caulk, and a wet sponge. Begin with adding a layer of the heavy-duty sealant on the top edge of the tile. Also, apply the sealant on the back of the shelf you want to hang. Hold the shelf against the wall and stick it firmly. Now use the caulk to fill any gaps between the tile and the shelf. Finally, with the wet sponge, wipe off the access caulk and clean the surface carefully.

Furthermore, you can add another layer of caulk to the shelf if you wish to give it a more polished look.

Space them according to the size of the items

The distance between the floating shelves must be determined considering the size of all of the items that will be placed on it. For instance, if you want to keep paperback books on the shelf, the standard distance must be 8 inches or 11 inches. Similarly, for CD’s or DVD’s, it must be 5 or 8 inches respectively. Make sure that you use a level to keep them horizontally straight.

If you are mounting a floating shelf in your kitchen, you should bear in mind that your shelf should be able to store bigger/more substantial items. These items are to remain within sight and easily accessible. Therefore, the shelf’s height above the kitchen counter must be about 18 inches to 23 inches.

Use toggle bolts to mount floating shelves on a plaster or drywall

Floating shelves are specially designed to be hung on every type of wall. The only difference is that we need specific hardware for different types of walls.

Mounting shelves on plaster walls can be disastrous with drilling, as it will damage more area than you intend to. Therefore, toggle bolts are a better way to get your shelves upright. They are the most reliable wall anchors and help hang floating shelves on drywall even when wall studs are not available.

Some plaster walls might already have wall studs in them, and you will only have to locate and mark the points by using an electronic stud sensor. Now, drill pilot holes through the points and place the brackets carefully to fix in the trenches.

If the wall doesn’t have a stud, then simply mark the location where you want to fix the brackets and follow the same procedure.

Pro Tip: Go for White-colored Floating Shelves

People usually choose the color of their shelves according to the color of the room. However, if you find it troublesome to select a color, then white shelves are the evergreen choice. White is a neutral color and blends with every color and furniture, providing valuable storage.

Mounting white floating shelves is the best way to display antiques and photo frames in the living room to bring out a positive vibe.

Final words

Installing a floating shelf requires a creative mind and fewer efforts. However, it can be tricky to choose the actual size and the color of the shelf.

However, once you have chosen them, it will work like miracles and transform the look of your wall.

Now that you have all the ideas on how to mount floating shelves easily, it is time to implement them and give your house a whole new look. Decorate the shelves with vases and artifacts for your living room. You can easily organize your kitchen shelves with beautiful coffee mugs or other crockery items, and flaunt your collection in a fancy way.
